ESI Public Arts
Richard J. Hinger founded ESI, Environmental Sculpture Inc. in 1998 when he began volunteering his time to teach his unique brand of found-object sculpture to at-risk youth around San Diego.Noticing the unsightly concrete trash receptacles around his home city, Hinger got the idea of covering the receptacles with painted and fired tiles which are ideal for outdoor art because they don’t fade or scratch. Richard made arrangements with the city to implement the project and then turned the paintbrushes over to local artists and students.
Since then, Richard has undertaken numerous public beautification projects with institutions such as The City of San Diego, San Diego Children’s Museum, The San Diego Port Authority, City of Encinitas, Home Depot, and others resulting in more than 100 permanent works of public art and touching the lives of thousands of people county wide.

Support public art with “Lidz for Kidz”
Own a Richard J. Hinger original and at the same time help Richard bring community arts programs to the masses. Richard has created a special series of works to raise funds for ESI Public Arts called “Lidz.” These “fossils from the future” were created from discarded objects and packing materials assembled inside trash can lids. Each work has a slightly different theme but the overall message is clear - mass consumerism is having catastrophic consequences for our planet.
Richard is currently offering his Lidz to art collectors and philanthropists and fans alike for a donation to ESI Public Arts of $1,000 each. Over time when the bulk of Richard’s work is in the hands of museums and private collectors these pieces should increase in value.
